Genesis Chapter 39 Discussion

This account of Joseph in Potiphar's house is familiar to many. Joseph was 17 when he arrived in Potiphar's household. It does not say how much time had elapsed until Potiphar noticed that God prospered Joseph in all he did. Joseph knew God. Jacob most likely shared his faith with Joseph and taught Him what he knew. I do not think that Joseph was very mature in His faith when he first arrived in Egypt. God favored and prospered Joseph in accordance with His will and purpose for Joseph's life. Joseph did not merit this favor and prosperity. But God blessed him more so than others.

I think that these blessings encouraged to look to God more and more. They strengthened his faith and resolve to follow God's ways.

Potiphar was an important official to the Pharaoh. He most likely had many responsibilities along with prestige among the people. He noticed Joseph, a slave, and chose to give Joseph responsibility over his household. This was quite and honor as well as putting Joseph under a microscope, so to speak. Potiphar's wife noticed Joseph, too. But not in a good way. She say that Joseph was young, and handsome, and virile. She desired to seduce him into adultery and attempted this repeatedly over a period of time.

Joseph must have been careful not to be alone in the house with her. But one day, he had to be in the house to do some task and he was alone there with the wife. She tried to ensnare him again, but he repelled her advances once again, running away from the the occasion for sin. His refusal to lie with the wife landed him in prison, as Potiphar either believed his wife or wanted to protect her reputation and honor.

Even in prison, God favored Joseph and intervened to have Joseph be put in charge of the other prisoners. God was further developing Joseph's leadership skills, but, more importantly, God was forming Joseph's character.

Joseph was not perfect. None of us are. So, God did not favor him because he was perfect, but because he was His.

In chapter 3 ,it says the master saw the Lord was with Him! The hope in Joseph heart was always in God , even from the depths of darkness!

I do not think that Joseph's owner actually thought that Joseph had rape his wife. He knew how she was or he would not have put Joseph in the Kings prison . This prison was for the higher society criminals . His hand was forced and he had to do something .

Wow. Goes to show take away the man, but you cannot take away his God. He did no wrong yet accused of wrong doing, but God was with him that even the keeper of the prison favored him. Amazing and humbling person.

In life, we go through many trials and tribulations, seen and unforseen.... So when I read this scripture " I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. 2 My help cometh from the LORD. I know "Father God" hears my cry, listens to me when I talk.... And shields and protects me, family, friends etc., UNCONDITIONALLY!

The most important value of life is the happiness of the soul, not anything outside of it.

I see God's hand in the life of Joseph from the day his father sent him to look for his brothers through his powerful position as Egypt's leader second only to the king himself. Praise God!

Verse 21~Even though Joseph was in a terrible situation, Jehovah God continued to be with him and this helped him to endure and keep his integrity.

Joseph never complains about his circumstances.

Verse 3: Potiphar could see that Jehovah God was with Joseph. Others should clearly be able to see the godly qualities of a God fearing man or woman.
  • BSP on Genesis 39 - 6 years ago
Verses 9 and 10 show how virtuous Joseph was. He not only kept from doing wrong, but he refused to allow himself to be in a compromising situation.

Galatian 5:22-23 Fruit of Spirit - Love, Joy, Peace, Control, Gentleness and Faith
Joseph lived a Spirit filled life, in his life we can see the fruit of the Spirit. He did not fall for worldly life style. He loved God, had the joy of the Lord, had Peace with God, had self control. Gen39:6 he was good person, above all he had relationship with God

We must stay faithful to the Almighty God no matter what we are going through because He will bring us through successfully.
  • BSP on Genesis 39 - 7 years ago
Potiphar's wife lied on Joseph and he was unjustly imprisoned as a result of this. In this unjust world we will face injustices, but God will be sure to correct matters in His own way and in His own time.

    Peace be upon you,

Here we also see that this was a test for Joseph and the children of Israel.

May our Lord increase our Knowledge.

I see the power of integrity in the life of joseph. He had the fear of the lord in his heart. As christians, we need to be real whether we're in darkness where no one else is seeing us. God sees every where. Let integrity watch over your life as did to joseph.Glory be to God. Integrity will protect us and lead us to a life that will please God. Decide never to please man to the expense of your relationship with God.

Here, in Genesis Chapter 39, God is preparing Joseph for greatness, in which Joseph gracefully accepts. In Mathew 25:21, 23, the Lord demonstrates the requirements in order to be ruler over many. By God's grace, compassion, mercy and infinite wisdom, He allows Joseph to go through the trials of being despised, hated, falsely accused and so much more. What a great example of what character is.

You see the life of Joseph a servant of God with patience in his lifestyle?.He was the first in the 12tribes of Israel to overcome a life of immorality in his time.Praise God,what about you have you overcome it nowadays?,ask yourself that question ifnot you shall certainly die in it oneday. This is the most common sin this days.Beware those that shall endure till the end shall be save. Are you for Jesus or not?,watch out CHRIST is knocking at the door of your HEART open it for him to come in soasto shape your life.l have decided to follow the footsteps of Joseph in this chapter and never to commit immorality in my lifestyle but wait for the LORD to give me my own wife by his GRACE and riches in his GLORY in JESUS CHRIST MIGHTY NAME AMEN.SAYS CYPRIAN THE ZION CROWN PRINCE OF ZION.

The Lord took Joseph through several experiences for a purpose. He was beloved as a son of Jacob. He learnt accountability and hardwork in Portiphar 's house and God prospered him as a slave. He further learnt leadership and responsibility as a prisoner and God was still with him. Little wonder Pharaoh committed so much into his hands. He was properly schooled by God.

Stephen, many Christians believe that Joseph was a type of Christ and that includes Christ 's ministry of salvation. God bless us all and also in the understanding of his Word. Praise Jehovah through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen!

Lorenzo, that 's an interesting point. I can see that you are a very educated person therefore I will not attempt to tell you anything about Scripture. However, my problem is to always be guard against the sin of omittion as a Christian. Putting into practice and applying in my life all I do know and understand concerning the Holy bible. In any case weather Potiphar was a eunuch or not his wife entered into a contract of marriage with him therefore her actions concerning Joseph was inexcusable. God bless us all and also in the understanding of his Word. Glory be to God in the highest through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen!

In the midst of all of the other heartfelt and pious comments, mine might seem silly, but perhaps someone with more knowledge than I of ancient customs might provide an answer. I read the entire KJv 35 years ago. I 've read some books several times since. Currently, I am translating St. Jerome 's Vulgate to improve my understanding of the bible and my Latin, and to keep my brain from filling with cobwebs. I use this online KJV as one check of my translation. This info just to let you know where I am coming from. So, both the Vulgate and the Hebrew but NOT the KJV clearly state that Potiphar was a eunuch. I do know that it was the quaint custom of many ancient cultures to perform this operation on male slaves intended for various jobs to eliminate one major distraction from their lives so they could focus their energies on their jobs. So, my question is, why does a eunuch need a wife? An ornament? Just to keep up appearances? Whatever the reason, it might go a long way to explain the behavior of Potiphar 's wife toward Joseph.... I would truly appreciate any information anyone has on this subject. At the very least, it would eliminate one of the minor things puzzling me.
