1 Corinthians Chapter 9 Discussion

    Frank,

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9:27, But I keep under my body, and I bring it into subjection:

When he says I keep my body under, the Greek phrase is "I beat my body black and blue," boxing terms!

When you are disciplining your body for a contest, you're actually punishing your body and putting it through pain to get it ready.

To bring it into subjection, lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.

The word castaway is an athletic term that means disqualified.

Can you imagine the judge on the judges' stand, and after you worked for 6 months or whatever it is just to get that little crown for your head?

You want to beat everybody else and be in the best shape that you can, and the judge sees you make the turn and you cut into somebody else's lane. Disqualified!

Paul says I keep my body in subjection, so that after I preach to others, I'm not disqualified because of the actions of my flesh.

You see, there's two aspects about serving Christ. Number one, is the Spirit of Christ in us ministering to others, and the control of the flesh, so that that influence is not pushed away by people that have received Christ through us.

It happens all the time. We talk truth, but we act like everybody else does!

It could be both eternally lost and rejected of men. Romans 11:22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. I would consider "cut off" comparable to "castaway". Rev. 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. Both scriptures are talking about saved people.

Castaway: rejected, or disapproved of; that is, by men: the apostle's concern is, lest he should do anything that might bring a reproach on the Gospel; lest some corruption of his nature or other should break out, and thereby his ministry be justly blamed, and be brought under contempt; and so he be rejected and disapproved of by men, and become useless as a preacher: not that he feared he should become a reprobate, as the word is opposed to an elect person; or that he should be a castaway eternally, or be everlastingly damned; for he knew in whom he had believed, and was persuaded of his interest in the love of God, and that he was a chosen vessel of salvation, that could not be eternally lost:

I would be interested in your opinion of what the Apostle Paul meant by "castaway?" verse 27

If we live according to the spirit, we will see and experience the same things as the disciples. Again, these things from the past are still prevalent today! Walking with Christ, being in the spirit, always abounding one too another. Thank you for your reply. Be vigilant and watch, the days of judgment are upon us! Always abiding in the spirit of the Living Christ!

Paul , was ship wrecked, jailed , beaten, an hated by many ,.. after meeting Jesus on the road to Damascus,.. which that too left a nice scar,.. I'd say, Paul certainly had it a lot worse, than many of us realized,.. being a Christian at that time an point, was turbulent,.. Not so much today in most cases,.. yes , there are some places that are very dangerous today but not all

How many times I have been ridiculed, by those of my own household! As reading and believing Paul's word I feel compelled even as him, to justify myself before others for my faith. Compelled by the love of Christ, i wish to know him more, being led by His spirit, living for Him in a time of adversity and unbelief, even among those of your own household! This example also with him, and those who are of the household of God!

Paul never experienced the adversity of a family, or the repercussions of growing and being unequally yoked, this is a condition that is found I think in many a circumstance who live together! Growing together in the gospel, I find a struggle, even as a race not only for the grace found in Christ, but the support we need for each other. Paul, expresses this same, even as He was married to the church and his followers, experiencing these same things we as head of households experience! A natural condition for all who are followers of Christ. Growing in the Love we so desperately need!

Hello Victor. In that use of the word 'glorying', I see that the Apostle Paul speaking of 'his boasting'. Now I realize that 'boasting' is generally used in the negative, self-promoting sense. But if we read this chapter, we see that Paul is having to prove his apostleship just as he did to a greater length in 2 Corinthians chapters 10 & 11, when others were entering the Corinthian Church & misleading them with false teaching & by use of eloquent speech.

So, in 1 Corinthians chapter 9, Paul goes about having to prove his apostleship & his love for the believers there. Unlike others, he & Barnabas did not demand gifts from the believers (they worked with their own hands): vv6-14. Paul abstained from marriage so that he would be free to devote himself to the Gospel, singular in purpose (v5), and made no demand to believers to provide 'food & drink' (v4). This all might have sounded as a "look at poor me denying myself", but Paul wanted to show them his love for them & for the Gospel, and that if had anything to boast about ("glory in" v15), his boasting wouldn't be about himself but in putting all aside for the "necessity laid upon him to preach the Gospel" & not having to be a burden on the believers during his ministry. Some could still see that as boasting - but Paul was showing them his love as an apostle & their father in the faith and if they could see through the falsity & showmanship of others, they should see a true apostle of Christ with a heart for the Truth & the Gospel.

"... than that any man should make my glorying void."

    what does "glorying" mean?
  • Fred Scanlan on 1 Corinthians 9 - 2 years ago
If we spread the gospel, we should do it out of love! Not too prevail over others, if so be, we would not speak the truths of the Holy spirit.

Guided freely by the spirit of Christ, so no one would come behind or hindered. Leading as it were setting the pace for others!

Leaving all things, in order to gain that which comes from above! Not by our works, but by His grace! The grace found in the example of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

I think many get this wrong. Of course if your running in a race your not by yourself others are running with you. Its talking about Wisdom. If one is the fastest runner find out from him what he does to be as fast as he is but also being the winner doesn't mean that much here on this Earth but in heaven it means everything and if you make it to heaven you are a winner. God only ask us to try our Best and if we do in his eyes we are winner's. But Wisdom is a key to getting better. Find others that are older and that do things better and hang out with them. They don't even have to be saved. Its nice when they are but Wisdom is Wisdom no matter who they are. If you are changing spark plugs with a pair of pliers find someone else doing it a better way like using a socket and ratchet.

It is not St. Paul nor his letter to the church group located in Corinth that is on trial here. If we Christians hold opposition to it, it is our own inability to comply with the commandments written within. The writing has stood the test of time and persecutions. It is what it is and we must not write between the lines. Who among us feels capable or holy enough to judge God?

for Verse 5, it's referencing rights that Paul has foregone such as having a wife-like Peter Cephas

No. We are to Help Each Other with Any Need when Possible. Money, Job, Food, Car, clothes, Whatever. Just Needs, Not Wants. And The Most Important Bible Studies, Fellowship. We are to Do The Same with The Lost, Telling Them How to Be Saved by The Blood of The Lamb. If We have a Big House Maybe We Can Downsize. Eternity is More Valuable than Our Stuff.

Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

James 2:14-16 14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body what doth it profit?

We are commanded to not hinder the gospel of Christ. It's all about the cross of Calvary. 1 Corinthians 9:14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel. We must eat and drink the gospel of Christ that Paul wrote in 1 Corinth 15:1-4. THE GOSPEL

1 Corinthians 9:2 If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord. Paul apostleship was seal by Jesus Christ. This is prove that Paul was important to Jesus. We must wake up and read his epistles. Paul also work harder then the rest of the Apostles. Is Jesus speak to us thru Paul's writings? We have to read and find out.
  • Ray321 on 1 Corinthians 9 - 6 years ago
1 Corinthians 9:14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel. I know the gospel that Apostle Paul wrote that Jesus gave him, I must follow and believe what it's means. Believing the gospel that was giving to Paul is Salvation thru Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Corinth 15:1-4 . Believe with all your heart PLUS NOTHING . AMEN

In verse 24 we must ask ourselves are we running the race of life in such a way that we will attain the prize of everlasting life?
