Discuss 2 Samuel 9

Hi Terry. You quoted from Deuteronomy 23:18. The word in Hebrew, is 'keleb', which in fact is 'dog'. We see this word used in several places, but it is also used figuratively about men & it's written in contempt. So we see this particular use of the word in Psalm 22:16,20; 2 Samuel 9:8; Isaiah 56:10; etc. But here in Deuteronomy 23:18, I believe the word is applied to 'sodomites', even as we see in the previous verse 17, "There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel."

Not only was prostitution forbidden amongst God's people, but any money associated with those people was forbidden to be used in the performance of a vow before God. And this basically means that neither the wicked person or their money were allowed into God's House, unlike the heathen who often engaged in temple prostitution & used the proceeds from it. Israel was not to behave like them in any shape or form.

Maybe it was "intended for more than a vow", as you suggest, i.e. for the giving of other forms of gifts, for other purposes. But it seems that in these two verses (also verses 21-23), a vow made before the Lord is utterly binding & not to resemble the practises of the heathen.

The statement of 2 Samuel 5:8 about destroying those who are blind and lame is in contrast to this statement here about the welfare of Mephibosheth. It clearly shows that the issue wasn't David's obsessive hatred of those with disabilities; but other issues. Namely, in this case for "Jonothan's sake" (v. 1) David had sought out the one remaining descendant who hadn't been killed. He regarded himself as a "dead dog" in verse 8; interestingly; King David also had previously referred to himself when Saul pursued him as that and a flea.

The reference to blind and lame could be symbolic in the earlier chapter of a weak defence. There are also explanations given of those who were symbolically that way due to idol worship. The third explanation is that the lame and blind themselves were mocking David; and thus still wicked in God's sight. As to ceremonial laws; that has passed since N.T. times. Nonetheless; we do best to avoid "political correctness" in assuming that those with disabilities can't exhibit the same wicked patterns as the rest of the world. Jesus warned the paralytic who He healed not to sin again so that "something worse would happen to him" ( John 5:6-14). That verse may indicate that sin DIRECTLY led to his condition originally; or indirectly. The absolute meaning of course; indicates that eternal damnation exists for all estranged from Christ.

May we all be edified as the challenge of study of difficult scriptures are examined; following the exhortation of 2 Tim 3:16.

2 Samuel 9, 2 Samuel 9:3, established honesty, trust & had already served King Saul. Vrs 9-12 established obedience & service to King David & even his own "all that dwelt in his house" became servant to whom King David told him to serve.

2 Samuel 16:1-4, it was Ziba who met King David while David was in exile with gifts of provision during such a humbling moment ( 2Samuel 15,) 2 Samuel 19:17, 2 Samuel 19:24-30,

He divided what was Saul's originally 2 Samuel 9:9-10,

Hopefully this is helpful in your study. Proverbs 25:2

Did you notice? David feared GOD & would not lay his hand on GOD's anointted & felt remorseful for cutting Saul's garment.

    1 Samuel 24:4,5,6 , 1 Samuel 24:10,

Saul also ripped Samuel's garment 1 Samuel 15:27 however 1 Samuel 15:28-29. Even after remorseful repentance 1 Samuel 15:29,30,35

Do think the significance of the clothing was a factor? 1 Samuel 2:19, His mother's sacrifice 1 Samuel 1:28

Saul pursued David to kill him: 1 Samuel 19:1,10,11,15,

& Saul ordered the prophets of GOD killed, possibly unarmed, their families, livestock & nursing babies included.; 1 Samuel 22:17,18,19 Same Saul that left the enemy King & livestock alive in disobedience to GOD's orders. 1 Samuel 15:1,2,3,8,9,

    Psalms 105:15

    David's mercy 2 Samuel 9:3-7,

    David's sin & judgement: 2 Samuel 12:7,9,11,12,14,18, 2 Samuel 13:1,6,7,8,12,13,14,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,28,29,30,31,32, after years 2 Samuel 14:25,30,31,32, 2 Samuel 15:6,10,12,13,14,16,23,30,31, 2 Samuel 16:3,5,6,7,8,11,13,22, 2 Samuel 17:21,23,29, 2 Samuel 18:5,7,9,10,12,14,15,17,20,27,32,33, 2 Samuel 19:1-4, "the sword did not depart from his house" etc. There were more scriptures about his consequences _.

Queen Vashti, consequence Ester 1:19, Ester 2:4

    Saul then 1 Samuel 28:3,7,18,19

David has Psalms of remorseful repentance, gives glory to GOD ALMIGHTY, shows mercy & humility at times. With Saul he shows remorse but didn't read much of repentance, etc.

However the Bible says: 1 Colossians 1:20,

    Job 12:16

Hopefully these are helpful in your study.

This was a show of gratitute from David to his friend Jonathan. Jonathan held his trust to David even to the extend of openly jeopardising both his life and position as the heir as next king to Israel. Even long after death of Jonathan, David could be trusted even in death!

Verse 7-David showed loyal love to Jonathan even after his death by showing loyalty and kindness to his son Mephibosheth.

Verse 1~David was looking for an opportunity to show kindness. We should do the same each day.
  • David on 2 Samuel 9 - 5 years ago
verse 1 tells us David done this for Jonathan's sake, when the normal would have been for a king to destroy all the heirs of the previous king David shows eternal mercy on Mephibosheth and gives him a place at the King's table. God the father has mercy on "dead dogs" today, v 8 for Jesus sake.We too can have God's mercy and forgiveness as once being the enemies of God to the children of God!!!

Adonai has changed our circumstances for us and generations to come suddenly. FOR WE ARE THE HEAD ... WE ARE ABOVE... WE ARE POSSESSING THE LAND ... NOW

This chapter is 1 that does touch my heart, for David to still remember Johnathan even though he isn't physically present,he continued loving Johnathan beyond the grave through his son,the pact went deeper then just David and Johnathan,he loved him as he did himself,there4 I believe his family was like David's family,he tried to love them and honor what Johnathan did for him even after all Saul did

There's not a "FRIEND", like Jesus. In our weakest moment, yet are we made strong. All because of the pressure Blood of Jesus Christ that was shed out on Mt. Calvery, on that Old Rugged Cross. Even, before man-kind consider himself to be a "Friend" of His's. This is God's Son Jesus Christ, in whom God is well pleased. To God Be Glory Now and Forever, In Jesus Name We Pray. "AMEN!
  • Peter A. Okebukola on 2 Samuel 9 - 6 years ago
This is a classic case of promise fulfilled and "the evil that men do lives after them; the good oft interred with their bones". David and Jonathan had a pact to be like brothers. David was true to this pact and showed kindness to Jonathan's lame son. The good that Jonathan did in not allowing Saul to take the life of David is now paying off.
  • Rachel on 2 Samuel 9 - 8 years ago
God will not forget His promises. He will take care of what belongs to Him. God could have healed Mephibosheth but He kept him for His glory. God wants us to know that in spite of our lameness when we are His -we shall remain at his table and no one can decide how we will eat or be treated because we belong to Him for His Glory!
  • Gamaliel on 2 Samuel 9 - 8 years ago
How did Mephibosheth come to this end even though he was the grandson of the king? Don't allow the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches and the lust of other things keep you from producing the optimum yield available to you. Realize though that even in that case we have a God King who still wants to show His kindness to us from the covenant He made with Abraham. Flow!
  • Betty Sue Harshbarger on 2 Samuel 9 - 8 years ago
David made a covenant with Jonathan ill remember you, David never forgot that covenant . many times we say we will stand by a friend or brother or sister , yet when it comes time to remember what they have done for us we forget . like Peter at the table with JESUS . but one thing for certain Jesus will never forget , Jesus said ill never leave you , never forsake you.
  • Verlena Seals on 2 Samuel 9 - 8 years ago
David reminds me of God. God does not forget our labor of love. David didn't forget the kindness that Jonathan showed to him.

I'm so glad that God knows us by name and not our physical condtions.

Mephibosheth remained crippled throughout his stay at the Kings house. He was blessed by David to eat continually at his table. My question is was there healing available for Mephibosheth?
  • Kaye on 2 Samuel 9 - 9 years ago
The principles of sowing and reaping never fails. Jonathan was a blessing to David, and in due time God honoured his faithfulness by returning a blessing to his Jonathan son. It is always wonderful to see the way David remembered kindness. It is no wonder he had a heart that was so submissive to God.

  • Ernest Graves on 2 Samuel 9 - 9 years ago
Its amazing how David asked is there any left in the house of Saul, not only did he get his answer. But Ziba found it necessary to tell David of the physical limitations of Mephiboseth. Althought men are quickly to point out each others flaws, God is so gracious to reward us for our brokeness.......Mephiboseth fell on his face and did reverence! And said,Behold thy Servant! Wow! However, Ziba did not find it necessary to be humble before the KING!
