Discuss Joshua 14

    Hi Gigi.

Thanks for going over these OT scriptures and refreshing us especially for those of us who haven't visited them recently.

I would like to point something out in Numbers 13 the 3 families of the Levites had to be 30-50 years old to serve and there probably were estimated thousands of them.

The age 30-50 may also emphasis maturity.

That was the prime of life for them

I believe the Lord preserved they're strength throughout their journey as seen in Joshua 14:10-11.

"And now, behold, the LORD hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.

As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in."

These services and the tabernacle itself pointed to Christ.

Christ also started his ministry at the age of 30.

    God bless.

I would amend my commentary to say that a great-grandson (4th generation) of the 1st generation adult counted in the census of Numbers 1:1-54 may have had to have been born at the latest 25 years after that census only if Hebron was conquered ( Joshua 15:13-19) immediately after it was given as an inheritance to Caleb in Joshua 14:6-15. That would allow that great grandson (4th generation) to be counted in the army that took Hebron. Any time delay between Joshua 14:6-15 and Joshua 15:13-19 increases the likelihood that a great grandson was born (my previous comments assumed a 5 year delay between Joshua 14 and Joshua 15, but I grant that may not have occurred). So here are the generation requirements under the worst case scenario with the shortest allowance of time:

1st generation: A member of the army counted in Numbers 1:1-54 any age greater than 20 years old.

2nd generation: A son of the 1st generation that was not counted in the army in Numbers 1:1-54. As long as he turned 20 the day after the census.

3rd generation: A grandson born to a 2nd generation son who was old enough to have a 4th generation son (great grandson) born to him prior to the 25th year after the census in Numbers 1:1-54.

4th generation: A great grandson born to the 3rd generation at least 1 day prior to the 25th year after the census in Numbers 1:1-54.

The average ages of the 2nd generation and 3rd generation on the day that their son was born would have been no more than 22 1/2 years to meet these requirements. This is not unreasonable given that the slaves in Egypt clearly had a fast birth rate driven by having children at young ages and the fact that marrying in the first year of military service delayed entry into the army by a year which was an incentive for bearing children before they turned 22.

    Hi Sister GiGi.

perhaps we can draw estimates off of this passage.

Joshua 14:7. Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart.
  • Chris - In Reply on Genesis 27 - 2 years ago
I see that they are mutually exclusive. 'Birthright' being the expected rights & privileges that come to someone because of his/her birth; in the Bible seen given to an offspring because he is the firstborn ('a right by birth'). See also 1 Chronicles 5:1,2 for passing on, or conferring that birthright because of the Will of the father.

'Blessing' being the verbal expression of love, care, appreciation, praises & prayer for the one being blessed. Genesis 24:60; Genesis 31:55; Joshua 14:13; Leviticus 9:22 as some examples.

Jean, there are only hints to ages of the Apostles and Disciples in the New Testament that I've found in my studies. However the Old Testament mentions ages often. Perhaps it is so we will follow Christ regardless of our ages & not discredit anyone because of age.

Could it be because GOD ALMIGHTY had already spoken about the insignificance or irrelevance of age? Except in determining prophecy?

    Jeremiah 1:6 -7

    Act 2:17

    Joel 2:28

    Genesis 18:11 -12

    Joshua 14:6 - 15:17

    Luke 2:42 -47

Hopefully that is as encouraging to you as it is to me.

Hi Christine. I'm unsure how you want to make the connection between those passages, as the person & work of both John the Baptist & Joshua were very different. The only common word in those Scriptures, is 'wilderness', so was wondering whether you wanted to know more about that & if there was any connection.

In Joshua 14:10, Joshua was recalling how the Lord had sustained him during the wilderness wanderings. The wilderness he speaks of are two separate ones: the Wilderness of Zin & the Wilderness of Paran: both on the Sinai peninsula.

When we read of John the Baptist in Matthew 3:1, "preaching in the wilderness of Judaea", (over 200 miles North of the other wildernesses) & this area is bounded by the mountains East of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, etc. & West of the Dead Sea. So when JtB came preaching 'repentance', he covered much of this area & then was found baptizing in the Jordan River. We're told in Matthew 3:5,6 that people actually left their cities to meet John, to hear his message & be baptized by him. Even the religious leaders were also intrigued by this man & went to see of what sort he was.

I hope this somewhat helps answer your question.

In Numbers 14:1-24 and Joshua 14:6-15, What role does conviction plays in commitment?
  • Jesse - In Reply on Psalms 91:7 - 3 years ago
    Teresa,

I just did a cross-reference search for Psalm 91:7 and it does not cross-reference to any place in Matthew. It does list these places in scripture: Psalm 32:6, Joshua 14:10, Exodus 12:12-13, Numbers 14:37-38, Genesis 7:23.

Another way to find out would be to search a bible concordance for a particular word used in Psalm 91:7, such as the word "thousand" to find out everyplace that word appears in Matthew to see if it matches Psalm 91:7. Just know that it may take a little longer that way.

April, I didn't see anything wrong with your question.I was not offended. He wants us to come to his sanctuary in "truth" John 14:6. I have been told that my posts do not comply with their rules. I am sorry if I offended anyone. May the Lord give you understanding of ALL of His word. It is a process, search for wisdom everyday. Test every spirit with His word. I was hopeful that I could help U.

Hi April,I contend for the truth of who God is; His works,His faith,His love, His judgments.Typically most "preachers"of our day want to keep their pay check (hirlings) so they do not teach the whole counsel of God. All inspired scripture is given for reproof, correction, instruction. If Knowing all sides of God;wrath, hate, testing,"does not help people"why do you think he had it all written down?

I didn't mean to offend or upset anyone,if i did im sorry and please forgive me,I am just trying to say that alot of us know the holy book side of GOD n his SON,but is there not another side?like humor,or favorite colors,I think alot of people end up veiwing father as a TYRANT,an oppresive ruler,do this and that or you go to hell,it doesn't really help people get to know them, they want friendship
  • April on Joshua 14 - 6 years ago
I am speaking of those who say they know what the word is,yet critize things in the bible and say stuff like GOD can't be who wrote these words and there are some people who are believers that make GOD out to be nothing but a dictator, like we have no freedom of choice to choose,I was wondering if people ever ask God and JESUS how are you doing today?,insead of bless me and other things, thats all..

April: What Believers are you talking about? All Believers that are Washed in The Blood of The Lamb have a Wonderful Fellowship with The Lord. Without His Spirit living within there is no Fellowship. Born-again Called: John 6:44 / Forgiving: 1John 1:9 / Washed: Revelation 1:5 / Baptized with The Holy Ghost: Matthew 3:11 / Changed: 2Corinthians 5:17, You will Know. Impossible not to! / Revelation 20:15

April, Job 21:30 "day of destruction" is the day of the Lord. God reserves the wicked for this day. "They are brought forth to the day of wrath." God brings them forth,it is his wrath. I declare his word, his word is truth. God is Love, kind, Wisdom, but I contend; he teaches us about his judgement and anger.
May I suggest you look at def. of "tyrant"in Mirriam Webster dictionary.
  • Lu2677 on Joshua 14 - 7 years ago
Hi April,"make them out to be tyrants"I am so thankful to answer;I hope you have time to read with understanding, wisdom, hope,my post.Job21:28-30:V.30"That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction?they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath"V.31,Who shall declare his way to his face?and who shall repay him what he hath done?"He is ,love, kind, just,He has anger.believe truth.More later.

Shalome,All,I was wondering I see many commentary in these passages but I was curious, has anyone tried to have a relationship with GOD and Jesus?,like ask them how their day is going, try to converse with them like you would a friend?,they want friendship with us,and most make them out to be tyrants, even the believers, they are JUST and FAIR and LOVE us,we were made to have a companionship with them

The allotment of the land in Canaan to the children of Israel has begun. Assignment is according to how God dictated to Moses. We pray to be joint heirs of His great Kingdom when He comes to take His bride home.

Joshua 14: 8, 9, 14; Caleb didn't inherit his mtn. because he was a 'brave' man, nor a good man, nor a man who worshipped God; lots of people are these things, but what they don't do is - "wholly follow the Lord God." There's more to 'wholly' than most people know - or even want to know; and it's ALL found in His word. But most people don't have time to read His word; sports, soaps, etc.
  • JOSEPH GUVAVA on Joshua 14 - 7 years ago
See how Caleb rightfully claimed what was his. He asked for his portion as promised in God's Word through the profet Moses. He asked for something which was in God's divine program. He did not ask amiss even as James says, "ye receive not because ye ask amiss..."If we ask anything which is in God's divine promises, by revelation, we are bound to receive.

Joshua was a man full of faith and courageous. How i wish we could be like him we will be able to claim what belong to us no matter how big as the mountain rather than ask for simple this in life.

Caleb was 85 and he said give me the mountain, he didn t say give me the valley, because at that mountain there were giants that had stop him from going in 40 years ago. So when people serve you, you will give them a second chance to whip the devils that whip them. So let the fire fall right now in all of our life s. Then let the rain come. So giants will have to run for cover.

Our God has always had a good plan for all of us. Jesus had appointed time for us to be blessed coz all of his works are perfect and his gifts and blessings are perfect. Our job is to believe that there is God and Jesus is the only mediator between man and God. We must believe and accept Jesus words and follow and obey his commandments for we shall see life in abundance. Jesus made a plan for us in the land to be fruitful and live with full of milk and honey. Jesus is so faithful to his promises for those who listens and obey his words. Jesus love us so much and he cant stop loving us. Thanks to Jesus for sheding his precious blood to save us. Amen
